Attorney Profile: John C. Gravel
| John is active in local
theater and he is one of the firm’s most active courtroom lawyers.
John includes banking, bankruptcy, business/corporate, civil litigation,
probate and estate planning within his areas of practice.
John earned a B.A. degree from St. Michael's
College in 1969. After graduating from Boston College with a J.D. in 1972, John
became a
1st Lt. in the U.S. Army Reserves, 1970-1978. |

John has participated in the following
law-related activities: chair of the VBA Committee on Specialization in 1981-82;
chair of the VBA Business Law Committee 1989-90; member of the VBA Committee
that drafted New For-Profit Corporation law with responsibility for drafting new
section on close corporations; member of the committee that drafted new
non-profit corporation law. Both have been enacted by the Vermont legislature.
John was also recipient of the VBA Pro Bono Award in 1992. John served as a member of
the Vermont Statutory Revision Commission for over 20 years, having been appointed by the Governor
of Vermont in 1979.
Civic accomplishments include being a member
of the Board of Directors of Vermont Catholic Charities, Inc. during the 1980's
for six years, three of which he was President; Board of Trustees member (now a
Trustee Emeritus) for Burlington College for three years in the 1980's, Board of
Directors member for the Chittenden County United Way for six years in the late
1980's and early 1990's, and its Volunteer Of The Year in 1986; Board of
Directors member and past president of Lyric Theatre for three year stints in
the 1970's, 1980's & 1990's. He was the first Chairman of the Board of Directors
of The Flynn Theatre for the Performing Arts, Ltd., and held that position for
seven years (1979-1986), and is now Director Emeritus. While Chair, John
negotiated the purchase, revival and restoration of the Flynn Center For The
Performing Arts, which is now one of the premier Performing Arts
Centers in New England. He was member Adjunct Board of MCHV for two years in
1980's; and a member of the Board of Directors and Secretary for the Burlington
International Games, Inc. (1975-1988).
